{"id":1341,"date":"2016-04-26T00:51:29","date_gmt":"2016-04-25T14:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ntsblog.homedev.com.au\/?p=1341"},"modified":"2016-04-26T01:09:29","modified_gmt":"2016-04-25T15:09:29","slug":"windows-10-kb3147458-windows-update-failure-0x80070003-error_path_not_found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ntsblog.homedev.com.au\/index.php\/2016\/04\/26\/windows-10-kb3147458-windows-update-failure-0x80070003-error_path_not_found\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10 &#8211; KB3147458 &#8211; Windows update failure &#8211; 0x80070003 &#8211; ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND &#8211; FIXED!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"ntsbl-3001591720\" class=\"ntsbl-before-content ntsbl-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6288941070289539\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px;\" \ndata-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6288941070289539\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"9356781486\"><\/ins> \n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div><h2>The Problem<\/h2>\n<p>I have numerous windows 10 machines and my desktop PC has started failing to apply the windows updates.<\/p>\n<p>These two windows updates failed to install<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3140743)<\/li>\n<li>Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3147458)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: because of these issues I have set my windows update to notify and let me choose when to download and install<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/328010\">Setup Windows Update via Group Policy<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You are told there is a new update and you let it download and install.<\/li>\n<li>Once completed you are asked if you wish to restart, so click restart<\/li>\n<li>You are told that it is getting ready to install updates<\/li>\n<li>In my case it gets to 3% and then reboots<\/li>\n<li>Next it gives a message, &#8220;Cannot complete install. Undoing changes&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The computer reboots again<\/li>\n<li>On login, you are told some udpates were unsuccessful<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Issue<\/h2>\n<p>In my particular instance this fixed the issue.<\/p>\n<p>I first went and viewed the log file: C:\\Windows\\Logs\\CBS\\CBS.log<br \/>\nDepending on how long it has been since the error occured you may need to look for a file called &#8220;CbsPersist_20160425131704.log&#8221; where the number is the date\/time of when the log file was created.<\/p>\n<p>Open the file and search for &#8220;0x80070003 &#8211; ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I found mine is a section as follows:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\n2016-04-25 23:12:54, Info                  CBS    Shtd: Processing non-critical driver operations queue, Count Count 16\r\n2016-04-25 23:12:54, Info                  CBS    DriverUpdateInstallUpdates failed [HRESULT = 0x80070003 - ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND]\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The issue is that one or more of the 16 drivers it is attempting to update has failed to be installed with a Path Not found error, but which one\/s?<\/p>\n<p>To find the details of the erroring driver update go to this file: c:\\windows\\Inf\\setupapi.dev.log<\/p>\n<p>Open this file and search for &#8220;Exit status: FAILURE&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I found the following, item of interest:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\n>>>  [Install Driver Updates]\r\n>>>  Section start 2016\/04\/25 23:13:24.172\r\n      cmd: C:\\WINDOWS\\winsxs\\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.168_none_76587b40265ca57e\\TiWorker.exe -Embedding\r\n     sto: Image State        = Specialized\r\n     sto: Image Architecture = amd64\r\n     sto: Transaction        = CbsDriversAndPrimitives\r\n     sto: Driver Updates     = 16\r\n!    inf: Unable to load INF: 'C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\DriverStore\\FileRepository\\capimg.inf_amd64_5a4379f63bea786c\\capimg.inf'(00000003)\r\n!    inf: Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.\r\n!!!  inf: Invalid INF 'C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\DriverStore\\FileRepository\\capimg.inf_amd64_5a4379f63bea786c\\capimg.inf', parsing error on line 0. Code = 1002\r\n!!!  sto: Failed to get version info for driver update 'C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\DriverStore\\FileRepository\\capimg.inf_amd64_5a4379f63bea786c\\capimg.inf'. Error = 0x00000003\r\n<<<  Section end 2016\/04\/25 23:13:24.282\r\n<<<  [Exit status: FAILURE(0x00000003)]\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>As you can see it is saying path not found in the FileRepository folder.<br \/>\nSo I went looking and its right, I had no \"capimg.inf_amd64_5a4379f63bea786c\" folder!<\/p>\n<h2>The fix<\/h2>\n<p>In my case I have many other healthy windows 10 machines so I went and looked and sure enough they had the missing folder.<\/p>\n<p>So I firstly copied the folder onto a usb key from the healthy machine.<\/p>\n<p>There is a security issue with the FileRepository folder in that you will have no permissions on this folder.<br \/>\nTo copy the \"capimg.inf_amd64_5a4379f63bea786c\" folder into the FileRepository directory you will need to go into the Advanced security and take ownership first.
